What is Jobs Growth Wales Plus
Jobs Growth Wales+ (JGW+) is a programme designed specifically for 16–18-year-olds living in South Wales. Fully funded by the Welsh Government, our JGW+ courses are free to both learners and employers.
Our Level 1 qualifications are a great way to ease yourself into employment and earn a wage while studying. It’s an opportunity to put some money in your pocket and boost your confidence and skills in an area that you are passionate about.
Unlike college, our JGW+ programme involves working in a salon or barbers with regular support from our trainer coaches. Go straight into employment and develop key skills to progress onto a Level 2 apprenticeship.
What to expect from a Level 1 qualification
Our Level 1 qualification focuses on the practical side of learning, giving you real-life experience working with clients. You will work alongside industry professionals, with monthly one to one support from one of our trainer coaches.
Learning with us is flexible and takes place in the salon and online. You will have unlimited access to our online learning platform, Moodle to help support you with different parts of the course.
Learners can expect to receive between £30-£60 per week, depending on the number of hours they work. To receive the full £60, you must work a total of 30 hours per week. You may also receive a meal allowance of up to £3.90 for lunch, in addition to travel allowance if travelling by public transport.
Level 1 hair, beauty and barbering
We offer Level 1 NVQ qualifications in hairdressing, barbering and beauty therapy. If you choose to study beauty therapy you can specialise in either of the following: facial skin care treatments, day make-up or nail services.
Our JGW+ programme is a great route to help you find a job or an apprenticeship. It can lead to multiple opportunities and higher paid job roles, helping you climb the career ladder.

JGW+ is aimed at those who would like to ease themselves into the world of work. It is for those that have no experience in the sector they would like to enter and want a taster. We offer JGW+ placements in hairdressing, barbering and beauty and can help you progress onto a Level 2 apprenticeship.

What happens after your JGW+ placement
After completing your JGW+ placement, you will have achieved a Level 1 certificate in either hairdressing, beauty therapy or barbering. If you are ready to take that next step in your career, explore our Level 2 apprenticeships where you can learn more advanced techniques and skills.

JGW+ learners can get paid between £30-£60 per week depending on the number of hours they work. To earn the full £60, you need to be working 30 hours per week.
Level 1 is not an apprenticeship but gives you a taster of what to expect on our Level 2 apprenticeships. Once you’ve completed your Level 1 course, you can progress onto Level 2 and work your way up to Level 3.
You don’t have to study a Level 1 course to go straight into a Level 2 apprenticeship. Our JGW+ programme is for 16-18 year olds living in South Wales who are not in a job, at school or college and want to ease themselves into work.
