Learning at work is the best way to learn

We’re celebrating Learning at Work week. Our Level 2 Beauty Therapist apprentice, Amelia Sidnell, tells us why studying an apprenticeship is the best way to learn.

What have you learnt?

Since working at Danika’s, I’ve learnt a variety of treatments. From manicures and pedicures to eyelash and eyebrow treatments. I love doing nails because it allows me to be creative. I enjoy waxing – seeing the clients happy with the end result.

In the beginning I wasn’t aware how much a beauty therapist did. It’s opened my eyes to the possibilities of working in different areas in the salon. I’ve always practiced nails and make-up at home but didn’t realise where it could take me.

I’ve learnt quickly and really enjoyed the practical assessments. Surprisingly I enjoyed the theory too – It’s been interesting to learn about the anatomy side of beauty.

Why is an apprenticeship beneficial?

I work so much better in a hands-on environment. It’s a nice change from being in school. It has helped my confidence when talking to clients as I was always nervous talking to anyone new.

It’s helped me build positive relationships with my colleagues and gain new friends. You gain unbiased and honest feedback from clients. I’ve also received lots of support from the other therapists in the salon.

ISA Training, part of Educ8 Training Group has really helpful information on their website, including the courses I’m taking part in. It helps me keep track of the units I need to complete.

How have you been supported?

I’ve loved working with my trainer coach Rhian. She’s been incredibly helpful and encouraging. If there’s anything I need or have any questions, she’s always happy to help.

She comes in once a month, giving me plenty of time to prepare and revise for our next visit. We do a variety of practical assessments as well as online exams, which are presented in a way that’s easy to follow. I find it’s the best way to learn.

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I can’t wait to move onto Level 3 and continue working with Rhian, Danika and everyone else around me. I wouldn’t have done it without them.
