National Barber of the Year 2023

Our Level 3 barbering apprentice has been crowned ‘National Barber of the Year’ at the UK’s Social Media Hair and Beauty Awards 2023.

Morgan Thomason from Spirit Hair Team is one to watch as he tells us his plan for life beyond the competition.

Why did you enter the competition?

I have a real passion for what I do. It was an opportunity to build my skills and inspire others. My goal is to become a big name within the hair industry. Opportunities like this will give me a platform to build a strong reputation as a stylist and grow my clientele.

I have big hopes for the future. I would love to work as a brand ambassador and travel for work. Putting myself out there will help me achieve my goals.

The winner is…

When my name was called, I was so happy and relieved. I wanted to make those around me proud, such as the team at Spirit Hair for their constant support. Salon owner and manager Janine O’Callaghan gave me the freedom and financial help to enter the competition. Every bit of advice and training has helped me become a better stylist.

Darryn Pitman has mentored me from the very beginning. His years of experience and success in this industry has truly helped elevate me and my skills and I owe him a special mention.

A huge thank you to all the stylists I’ve worked with and to everyone involved in the Social Media Hair and Beauty Awards for making me ‘National Barber of the Year 2023’.

What does the future hold?

My goal for 2023 was to win at least one competition and I’ve done it. I have two more competitions lined up this year and hope I can get a second win. I’m very competitive which is why I enter.

I’m looking forward to building my clientele within the salon and grow my social media following to show people what I can do.

A career in barbering

To other learners, I would say go for it. The hair industry was always something that interested me, but it was never something I pushed myself into.

With the right people around you and working in a good environment such as I do, the industry is amazing. I could never imagine doing anything else.

For those who have no experience and just entering the industry, the JGW+ programme offers you the chance to try before you commit to studying an apprenticeship. Giving you the opportunity to see if it’s something that you really want to do.

Push yourself towards your goals with our Level 1 JGW+ qualification in barbering or find out more about our Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships.
