Undoubtedly Christmas is the busiest time of the year for salons across Wales. To gain insight into the preparations underway, we caught up with Level 3 Hairdresser, Crystal Chelsea.
From Slunks, Cardiff, Crystal acknowledges the challenges Hairdressers face during the festive season and emphasises the importance of self-care. Training has been paramount to stay ahead of the game and has inspired her towards a future career in management.
Preparing for the busiest time of the year
As Christmas is just around the corner, we’re encouraging people to get booked in now. It’s such a busy time for us and we always try to accommodate everyone. However, sometimes it’s just not possible. There’s only so many hours in the day, people need to plan their appointments in advance to ensure they don’t miss out.
It’s so important that hairdressers take time out for themselves and avoid burnout. I like to come home and reflect on my day. I write up my notes, look back at photos and think what went well and what I would do differently. After 10 minutes of reflection, I try to relax, unwind and switch off before another busy day in the salon.
We get asked for a lot of blunt cuts this time of year. Clients seem to want all the texture in the summer and come winter, they want something easy and low maintenance. Sleek hairstyles are in high demand during the Christmas period.
Staying ahead of the game
There are always new trends emerging and if you’re not on top of it, your clients will find someone who knows how to do it. It’s vital to keep training – not only to stay ahead of the game but to stay in love with what you do. Otherwise, you start doubting your ability and question yourself. Self-doubt can really start to take over if you let it in.
Training is fundamental to retain clients. I’ve recently been learning how to do mullets. There are no limitations as they can be textured, sleek, short, long, masculine, feminine, harsh or soft. I really enjoy getting to create exactly what the client wants.
I’m enjoying barbering the least – I’m brand new to it and it’s a whole new skill set. I underestimated how hard it was. Barbers have so much speed and precision – it’s honestly so impressive.
Inspiring a career in management
I’m inspired by my manager Ty Davies. He is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met and so genuine and honest. If I’ve done something well, he tells me straight away and is always there to help me if there’s something I need to improve on.
You don’t have to second guess everything which is so refreshing. He’s got an incredible balance of friendship and professionalism – I have so much respect for him. He’s done so much in his life and is incredibly humble about all his achievements.
I aspire to be like him as a person and in my career. He’s inspired me to eventually go into management. Sophie Mundy has also taken me under her wing. I’ve only been in Cardiff a year and she’s looked after me both inside and outside the salon.
