Some things you just can’t learn in a classroom

Mia Bella Apprentice, Rosie Umeanozie, explains why she left college to study an apprenticeship and how her passion for nails makes learning fun and prepares her for a career in the beauty industry.

New salon, new me

I started my apprenticeship in May 2022 and decided to transfer to Mia Bella, Pencoed, where I have received high level support and training from Salon Owner, Kelli Gwilliam.

Since working at Mia Bella, I have felt supported and have loved working here. Kelli has lifted my confidence and given me support and encouragement to push myself further.

She has made me feel like I can do anything.

Preparing me for the real world

When I left school, I went straight to college and studied beauty therapy. The course focused more on massage and facials, but I was more interested in studying nails. So, I left college and decided to pursue my passion.

Learning on the job has given me experience in client engagement and customer service and has allowed me to get to know each client on an individual basis.

I feel I have learnt a lot more about the industry, the business, and things such as cash handling which you just can’t learn in the classroom.

At college, there tends to be a large group of learners that the teacher must share their time with, which can definitely make a difference to the training and quality of feedback.

Studying an apprenticeship, you receive 1:1 support and training.

The best part

I really enjoy doing nail art because I can be creative and artistic. No day is the same and there’s always something new to learn.

I’ve already told my friends to study an apprenticeship because there is no limit to learning and you get a qualification out of it.

It’s a job to enjoy and I am excited to stay on at the salon and see where it takes me as I have big hopes for the future.

Salon Owner, Kelli Gwilliam said “She’s intimidating, she’s that good. Rosie has no fear. She goes home and practices and has so much passion and drive.”
